Mastering Minoxidil - How to Use it and What to Expect

Minoxidil, otherwise known as Rogaine, is a topical medication that is used to increase hair growth.

Minoxidil has been proven to stimulate hair growth on the bald spot located on the back of men’s heads.

How to use Minoxidil

This medication must be applied to the scalp at least twice a day for four months, once in the morning and once again in the evening, before any noticeable change appears.

It must be applied to a dry scalp and left untouched for four hours in order to ensure proper absorption (no swimming, no shampooing, etc.).

Once you notice results, you must continue to use the product to maintain hair growth.

The negative side to Minoxidil

- Minoxidil is not as effective on patients who are old, have large areas of baldness or who have been bald for a long period of time.

- The oral form of minoxidil can increase heart rate, cause fluid retention and weight gain and can cause a decrease in blood pressure.

Therefore, patients with significant coronary problems should not use this medication.

- The high alcohol base in Minoxidil can cause irritation to the eyes.

- The side effects of Minoxidil include skin irritation, hives, itchiness, swelling and sensitivity.

- The use of Minoxidil may cause a temporary increase in hair loss during the first few weeks of treatment.

This shedding period, however, is a natural part of the hair growth cycle.

Minoxidil can only be purchased by prescription.

Hair Loss Non-Approved Drugs

Non-Approved Drugs That Can Help Hair Loss

At present only two medications have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss, namely finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine).

to many patients, some individuals are disappointed with their results and seek other forms of treatment.

Often they turn to drugs that have not been approved for the treatment of hair loss, but which have shown themselves over time to have a positive effect in dealing with this condition.

1. Avodart (dutasteride) - this is a new medication that is not yet approved for hair loss but which offers exciting possibilities for treating male patten baldness.

It works in a similar way to Propecia which prevents one of two enzymes from converting testosterone into DHT thus blocking two thirds of DHT production.

Avodart takes this process a stage further by blocking both enzymes thus reducing overall DHT production by 93%.

It is currently approved for the treatment of enlarged prostates and should not under any circumstances be taken by women of child bearing age...
