Hair Transplant Surgery - How To Get The Best Treatment

The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (a consumer organization) provides the following guidelines for patients to ensure they get the best possible treatment when undergoing hair transplant surgery:

Responsibilities of The Patient

In addition to rights, patients undergoing surgical hair restoration also have responsibilities.

These responsibilities assist the health care team by providing thorough knowledge of the patient's complete medical condition and psychological needs, so that the care that he/she receives is as effective and complete as possible.

1. The patient should provide all information that is important to their care and treatment decisions. This information should include his/ her complete medical history, current medical condition and completely candid information about the patient's psychological well being.

2. The patient should read the educational materials provided to him/her by the IAHRS member and ask questions about any of the information that seems unclear or is of concern.

3. Follow-up appointments are important for continuity of care and the monitoring of a patient's condition. Therefore, patients need to make sure they keep these appointments. If, for any reason, the patient cannot do so, the patient should inform the IAHRS member physician's office as soon as possible, and reschedule the appointment for another time.

4. The patient is often given instructions related to self care, such as taking medications, instruction for proper graft maintenance, bathing, etc. These instructions need to be followed as prescribed in order to optimize the treatment. If, for any reason, the patient has trouble following the instructions, he/she should call the IAHRS member and ask for help or information.

5. The patient needs to express his/her thoughts openly and freely, so that the health care team can be informed about any worries or concerns the patient might have that would effect care and treatment outcomes. Some patient concerns may be non-medical, (such as emotional, spiritual, or family-related) but will still effect the patient's care and recovery. The patient needs to bring these concerns to the health care team's attention, so the team can address them.
