Sudden Hair
Loss: Causes & Treatments
Sudden
hair loss occurs, as many know, as a result of radiotherapy and
chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
This sudden hair loss is known as Anagen effluvium,
where the treatment stops the growth phase of hair follicles.
Sudden hair
loss can also be caused by some medications such as diuretics,
blood thinners, acne medications and birth control pills.
The sudden
hair loss associated with chemotherapy can happen overnight with
a patient finding large amounts of hair on the pillow the next
morning.
To minimize
the dramatic effect of sudden hair loss, some patients
choose to cut their hair very short so the change in appearance
is not so drastic.
As there may be a patchy scalp while the hair is
falling, some even shave their head prior to treatment, preferring
a completely bald head. Wigs, hats or headscarves can then be used.
Ninety percent of actively growing hairs can be
shed leaving about ten percent in the resting phase.
As the chemotherapy is used to destroy fast-growing
cancer cells, other fast-growing cells in the body are also affected,
such as those responsible for hair growth.
This sudden hair loss is only a temporary condition
and the hair grows back after the treatment is completed. There
may be a change in texture or even in the color.
To compensate for the sudden hair loss involved
with cancer treatments, many women choose to wear a wig, especially
with the wide variety now available including those made from natural
hair and synthetic fibres.
A treatment which has had good success in helping
cancer patients recover well from sudden hair loss is the NewHair
Biofactors range from Nisim International.
How NewHair Biofactors hair loss natural remedies
are used:
The shampoo
should be applied and scrubbed into the scalp with the fingertips
for one minute. The hair should be rinsed and the shampoo repeated.
This should be done daily.
If a conditioner
is needed, one of the Biofactors conditioners is recommended
to ensure the actives in the shampoo and extract are not neutralized.
Apply the stimulating
extract after the shampoo and conditioner to the area to be treated
and massage into the scalp with the fingertips.
Later the same
day apply the extract again to the area being treated.
